3 Steps to Building Resilience… by Taking ACTION!

Stay with me… the ditsy beginning will get much more pointed, I promise!…

I’m sure that most, if not all of my friends would advocate that I LOVE a thrifty purchase, who doesn’t right? Always on the hunt for a good bargain whether it be food, appliances, renovation or travel  focused, I’m there!

So when I was gifted with a few $’s for my birthday just last week, I was quick to jump online and hunt down the best buy I could find to curb my love for pasta and dive into my 2017 Year of ACTION mantra!

Today I got into the car, drove over to K-Mart and purchased my first “SPIRALIZER”!!!!

I’m soooo E.X.C.I.T.E.D!!! I am also a little freakishly scared that I am “super excited” about a vegetable spiral maker… 😦 I KNOW! But buying this spiralizer at the bargain basement price of just $15, is something I have umm..ed and arr..ed about for a long time… FINALLY going out of my way to make a purchase is a reflection of my resilience to forge ahead and my capacity to take ACTION and turn my dreams into reality!

My dream for 2017 and beyond… is to walk forward as a resilient Women & Mother & take positive ACTION along my journey toward true Happiness, Physical and Mental Wellbeing!

Late last year my employer summonsed all of us (me and my colleagues) to attend a “Resilience in the Workplace” seminar (as the Agency was undergoing a restructure)… although pro-active and forward thinking for an Employer, my first thoughts (and most of my colleagues) were oh no, you’ve got to be kidding me… I don’t need to attend a resilience workshop!

I couldn’t have been more WRONG! It was the most uplifting workshop I think I have ever attended and it gifted me with the tools to focus on my psychological well-being and in turn a desire to invest in resources within my life, to proactively contribute to both our family and my self productivity… HAPPINESS!

It is my firm belief that “giving of yourself, building physical and mental wellbeing, creating strong relationships and maintaining positivity in our circles equates to happiness!”

So my gift to you, to help you and me on our path toward true happiness, is to share some of the skills I learnt by attending this workshop, the key points I interpreted and took away from my attendance at the training (in my own words) 🙂

My learnt fundamental steps for happiness…

  • Find your calling!…  Evaluate your standards, morals and values… then evaluate your interests and career values along with ask yourself “what do I enjoy (I mean really enjoy) doing”?… Your area of enjoyment may be a hobby, activity, pastime, the sky is the limit. Next highlight overlaps – the overlaps are where your heart and head meet, the special place that promotes happiness and content within you… those things indicate your CALLING… what you should be doing and why you should be doing it… the common ground to strive for in your life to ensure productivity, contentment and happiness! Now follow your dreams, take action and reside in your calling!

  • Invest in you!… Recognise your values, the things that are paramount to you and invest to maintain them! Surround yourself with resources to allow you to enrich  your life.. these resources may include –
    • UPLIFTING & POSITIVE PEOPLE… friends who support and value you, friends you can laugh with, friends that inspire FUN
    • GOOD FOOD… buy that spiralizer from your wish list 😉
    • A HEALTHY BODY & SOUL… take that exercise class, go for that morning walk or take a swim
    • LOVE YOURSELF and put YOURSELF FIRST!… Or if you’re a Mum (Parent) a more easily digestible phrase may be to put yourself EQUAL FIRST! … it’s not selfish its essential to happiness!

  • Build Emotional Resilience!… this step will be reinforced as you progress along your journey of achieving the first two steps wholeheartedly. Learnto accept the things I cannot change (in many cases the problem) and empower yourself by focusing on “my circle of influence” (in most instances my emotion – positive self talk, sun rays and physical activity).  I have learnt that my anxiety and depression occurs when my circle of concern can not be influenced by me (right here, right now – things that are effectively out of my control). My key focus steps to achieving Emotional Resilience is to recognise and take action on the things we cannot change! Search for tools and resources to make change viable, but only focus on those changes you can influence! Focus on controlling your emotion when faced with adversity and challenge –
    • Focus on one thing at a time
    • Break the problem down into manageable parts
    • Pause to breath and be still
    • Empty your mind from chatter (brain talk)
    • Develop a mantra – a focused repetition of positive uplifting words
    • Find the possibilities and positives
    • Evaluate feelings V’s Reality
    • Reflect on past achievements
    • Take positive action!

Of the many things I have learnt over my life the phrase I am going to impart on you could not ring loader for me this year… MY year of ACTION!!!

My gift of positive words to inspire possibilities within you and I are…

“The path between dreams and reality is ACTION and the perk is… ACTION BANISHES FEAR!”

Take ACTION! I plan to ❤

Mummatopia Snack Happy Bliss Balls

Mummatopia Snack Happy Bliss Balls.

Snacks on the go are rather hard to maintain in our house with 6 hungry mouths to feed, 4 of which I would rank highly in the category of “bottomless pits”!!

At Mummatopia, happy hour starts as soon as the kids arrive off the bus home from school and continues through to the serving of dinner. I need to be on guard and combat around 3 hours of little people with hungry appetites.

Cue healthy snack supplies!

Balancing hunger pangs from energetic 6-13 year olds is a juggling act indeed. But juggling healthy eating habits and striving for organic and raw options… that’s a task I’m finding almost therapeutic! Yes, you heard me right… therapeutic!

You see creating snack happy healthy eating options has not only enticed me into creating my very own delights… but has also reassured me that my children are getting the best sustenance possible… no additives, no sugar highs and absolutely no preservatives. These are huge benefits alone but an added bonus is that my actions are providing me with a restful peace that comes with knowing I am trying my best!

Everybody’s best is individual and yours certainly doesn’t need to align with mine. So if you don’t get that therapeutic aura from creating healthy snack for your children and instead find it somewhere else, that’s ok!

Me, I’m going to keep on enjoying the snack happy healthy eating kicks while they last 😉

In today’s blog I am sharing with you one of our family favourites, so much so that it requires a DOUBLE batch just to see us past 24 hours of supply!

These little suckers come with the bonus dousing of a healthy serve of Brown Flax Seeds, which yield the richest sources of a plant-based omega-3 fatty acids in the world, not to mention being a rich source of micronutrients, dietary fiber and vitamin B1! But the BEST part about adding them, is that your kids will NEVER know!!!

Mummatopia Snack Happy Bliss Balls are oh sooo yummy, gluten, sugar, egg, dairy and wheat free little balls of raw vegan bliss! Enjoy!

Make it Happen!

Never let it be doubted that you shouldn’t put off to tomorrow what you can do today!

If I had listened to myself and this advice 6 months ago, I would be so much further on my journey than I am… till a few days ago I was stagnate, reflecting on what should have been and every so slightly disappointed in myself for not making waves instead of ripples on the weight loss journey!

But let’s face it, if any one of us had that golden key, we’d be basking on our mega yacht, sipping invigorating green smoothies, whilst being catered for with organic and most certainly raw decadent delights!

“Get real! It’s really just me on my make-it-happenisland… with my thoughts of weight loss desires, my skinny coconut milk based cocktail and my never ending urge to pull my finger out and get on with it! I need to make a change, MAKE IT HAPPEN!”

I’ve come to learn over my 40 odd years on this planet that… Just like the start of EVERY journey EVER faced by any person for any reason, wishing gets you NOWHERE!

After all, as they say… if you don’t make a change and you do what you always do, you’ll get what you always got!

It’s easy to think positive thoughts, persuading yourself that you will get there, that it WILL happen one day, eventually. BUT let me tell you from cold hard experience, unless you exert FORCE there is no journey!

Momentum only get’s you so far, the rest of your path needs to be filled with a constant effort to force yourself that extra step, that extra few minutes, that extra day or how ever long or far it takes to see results! We need to use that extra push of will power we have inside us all that’s waiting for action to come into play! We need to push ourselves out of our comfort zone, exert energy and force ourselves to achieve what we want!

There is always an excuse! We either listen to it and believe it and FAIL, or we conquer it, move forward and ACHIEVE! It IS as simple as that!

I found myself watching not one but two TED broadcasts last weekend. I couldn’t believe that my husband and I actually found 25 minutes in the day (together, believe it or not) for ourselves to shut all else out, be still and listen! That in itself was a huge achievement!

Through listening I learnt that we can ALL get what we want out of life, if we only force ourselves to take the steps needed! But also that if you don’t take action in the first 5 minutes you more than likely never will!

The second TED broadcast, we stumbled upon as it auto played at the conclusion of our first video… almost ready to switch off due to the monotone voice of the presenter. A few seconds of her life story captured our attention… and I learnt another major fact of life… our mental health influences and inhibits our success!

You might think of success as financial, but let me set you straight, success comes in ALL forms and through many varied paths of achievements on numerous levels! But if we let life get the better of us and in this instance by life I mean greed, resentment, jealousy, envy and bitterness, you will never move forward and achieve happiness and success, these things will hold you back and keep you from your goals!

So after my TED awakening I decided to clear my negative thoughts, jump out of bed and force myself into a new day! A day filled with not only hope but ACTION! Action that was going to see me move forward and achieve my goals!

I believe the recipe for really making a difference in your life and for guiding you on your journey…. is taking small forceful steps and refusing to let negativity fog your path in the process!

This week my small steps have included:girls-and-me-bike-ride

#1… an early morning 9km bike ride with my middle two children at an unearthly before school hour, completed in time to return home for the production line of breakfast, lunches and getting them off on the bus to school

#2… making a concerted effort to purchase more healthy food for our family of 6, by replacing the most chemically effected fruit and vegetables with organic varieties

#3… buying fresh and more often, making every effort to keep it local and creating healthy snacks

#4… assertively guiding my metal health to avoid negative conversation and thoughts and pulling myself up during moments of weakness

and lastly but not least..

#5… taking the opportunity to believe my husband, when he said their were “no hills” on the 2 hour bike ride he was about to take me on, because without this belief I NEVER would have gone with him!

So as you can see I am taking my journey of change one step at a time… I have no doubt I will stumble and at times possibly fall along my path, but a combination of swift force and positive vibes WILL see me succeed!

A change they say is as good as a holiday and I LOVE holidays!

*P.S.* I am also going to post a few of my healthy snack creations on the blog to help keep us all well nourished on whatever journey we have chosen to take! 😉

Stay tuned! x

Mumma v’s Me!

I was sitting with my Doctor not so long ago, and being a dedicated “my children always come first” kind of Mumma found myself in tears as he mentioned (or more like insisted) that I needed to put myself FIRST! Me above my children?? NEVER!

Mumma V's Me!

My health had been poor and the general day to day stresses of being a working mother of 4 over the past 13 years had taken its toll and especially in my case, the sleep deprivation.

But as my Doctor saw the tears streaming down my cheeks he proceeded with his motivational interjection into my psyche by adding … “EQUAL FIRST”!

There is no way I could put myself above my children, but hearing his catch phrase made me think, as a Mother I get that! THAT I can do! So although it has taken me some time to get the ME part of my life back into focus, I’m now on a mission!

We’ve all heard the resounding comments of “you need to look after you first” before you can look after others. But do we really believe it and does it take a place in the everyday life of a Mother? I can honestly say NO, up until this point this Mumma has never really put herself first, from the early years of Breast Feeding before eating myself, putting my babies to sleep and ensuring their comfort before mine, always hesitant to spend $’s on me and being more than happy to raid every last cent in the piggy bank for my family, packing a healthy lunchbox and scooting out the door with not a moment of thought to how my eating plan would look for the day. Those are all practices I’m sure many Mothers have and yet we just don’t seem to get it!

A Mother’s health and wellbeing is paramount to every family unit! We help make our family tick. And we all know a clock gets out of rhythm, slows and stops if the hands loose the support and momentum of their hard working centre cog!

Well this week has seen me start my mission of creating a year focused on ME! As an equal of course! 😉

AND I’ve started my journey by losing a whopping 6 kg’s! Yep in ONE WEEK! I couldn’t be more motivated with that kind of start, just what I was aiming for…a swift and speedy introduction to wave me on and keep the momentum on full throttle!

My mantra for the past 7 days has been “Food as Fuel.. when you need it, not when you want it”!

Simple theory right, but not so simple for Mummatopia! I have always struggled with my weight and to kick the kilos I have tried a range of different approaches. None however have I really focused on my mindset and putting mind before matter, literally, in my approach to weight loss and lifestyle changes.

Yes this week has been hard, somewhat mundane and ever so loooong! But every time I felt my tummy rumble, my mind wander or my body craving, I just tucked into my mantra and realised that those feelings were the consequence of me loosing FAT and walking a journey to better health! Hearing my tummy growl encouraged me to stay the course.

Of course this is just the beginning and everyone knows the journey is never an easy path, but rather an individual trek for each of us to explore. I have just approached the curve of my life story’s turning point and with dedication, enthusiasm and sheer determination, something all Mumma’s most definitely have, I dam well intend on doing it and if you’re interested so can YOU!

Jump on board, I’d be more than happy to have you along for the ride! ❤

Growing childhood memories

Growing Childhood Memories.png

Creating a fun filled, family and friends lifestyle is something that didn’t just happen upon us. It took a lot of thought to plan and pockets of hard earned cash to build a platform for our family to create an active entertaining lifestyle, that will hopefully feed the mind and soul of our children’s future childhood memories.

After just completing an Easter ‘Great Outdoors Weekend’ with 50+ people, 5 tents, 1 caravan, 1 Ski Boat, water sports equipment, loads of FUN, food in abundance and a friend who turns up with a decadent (ONLY 5 ingredient) slice to cater for the multitudes!!! What more can you ask for??? … (Tammy you’re the best ❤ …slice post to come…)

No top end purchases here… my thrifty skills were well implemented with many visits and tags (by driven friends) throughout Facebook buy and sell groups, Gumtree and eBay to source our ski boat, stock of water sports toys and safety equipment, of which we now have enough to engage a small army!

Spending time with our children is so crucial and a pastime my husband and I both LOVE. As we have learned already with an eldest approaching 14, time does fly bye and you only have one chance at the early years that form the foundation of their future pathways!

So, as parents, we took a slow deep look at our own childhoods, picked out those times that stood out as being what shaped our lives and happiness and took the steps to build the same lifestyle opportunities for our children. Our choices might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it definitely fills our tea-pot to the brim! Fun times, family, friends and the great outdoors, what more could you want as a child (or an Adult)?

The opportunity to engage with people and create lasting memories and life long friendships is something that is not out of any family’s reach! As parents we sat down and set three family goals we really would like to impart on our children (aspirations, experiences and journeys included) and set about to achieve them.

You can do it too! Reflect, regroup and reapply your cherished childhood moments and impart them on to your children! Who says you need to re-invent the wheel… A little planning can go a LONG way and help you build for your own family’s journey. If you plan the big picture, it will help the little things fall into place along the way.

As we move along our family goals pathway, I ask myself are we doing it right?… and the answer is always… we’re trying and how can that be wrong!
